I didn’t ask to be born…?

Have you ever had one of those days when you felt like you were going to explode?

You felt like shouting at anyone who might be close enough to hear you…

Why does life have to be like this? I didn’t ask to be born!

I’ve felt like that once in awhile. … I’m sure you have too.

When that happens to you, it usually happens on a day when everything has gone wrong. Nothing has turned out the way you wanted it to. Probably you’ve kind of made a mess of everything you’ve tried to do. Everything you try to do seems to turn into a failure. You have good intentions. You want to do everything right. But, somehow, it seems like nothing works out the way you have it planned. And if it isn’t really your fault … you know that, sooner or later, someone will blame you anyway.

When that happens to you … maybe you look around and think of all the things that have gone wrong … and, probably, you shake your head and you feel like saying…
“I didn’t make me like this. I certainly wouldn’t have designed my life to be like this….l. In fact, I never even asked to be born.”

Do you know the feeling?

Well you’re right.

The world is a cruel, messed-up, mixed-up, confusing place … and you weren’t even asked if you wanted to come into the world in the first place.

Well … if what happens to you is not your fault … who is to blame then?

Who do you think is responsible?

You probably have some ideas about that.

But let’s take a moment to look at you.

You’re reading this with eyes you didn’t design.

You’re listening to sounds and voices with ears that you didn’t design. You probably couldn’t – even on a good day – design something like your ears.

Your lungs are sucking in air. Your stomach is digesting the last meal you ate. Your whole body is doing some pretty amazing things.

And you didn’t design any of those things that you use every day.

You have life and personality … and you didn’t design them either.

You can’t take the blame for any of that …

… but then, you can’t take the credit for the parts you like, either.

Let’s imagine you have a day when everything is just about perfect. You don’t have any arguments with anyone. You don’t even drop anything or break anything or lose anything. It’s just a good day in every way.

Is that the time when you blurt out … It’s not my fault! I didn’t ask to be born!

Of course not.

You wouldn’t say that on a good day.

But when things go wrong – when things don’t happen as we would like them to happen — that’s when we complain. Human beings, like you and me, are like that. We try to find someone else to blame when things don’t go the way we like.

It certainly won’t bring you much happiness. If you can’t blame your parents … or someone else … then you try to blame whatever “mysterious power” is out there making everything go around in our world.

Haven’t you ever tried to throw the blame on God? After all, if he created the world, then when things go wrong that must be his fault … he must have designed something wrong.

Haven’t you ever had those thoughts?

But are those thoughts true? Is it right to blame God when things don’t go the way you expect?

I don’t really think so.

Wouldn’t it be a good idea to try and find out what God does have in mind? Wouldn’t it be a good idea to learn the reason why he brought you into the world? He has given you such a complicated and amazing body. He has given you the personality you have. He has given you life. He has given you the right and ability to make your own choices.

But that’s not all.

God does have a special plan for you, and for your life.

You don’t have to stumble around in the dark shouting Why was I born?

God has the answer … if you truly want to know it. God wants to share life with you in a very special way.

He knows exactly who you are.

He knows what you feel, and why you feel that way.

He is interested in what happens to you. He cares very deeply about you and for you.

He loves you.

And he knows why you were born.

It’s something to think about.
